The Enneagram isn’t a box.

It’s a circle. One simple symbol contains deep wisdom

The Enneagram has always been about waking up.

Far from a way to make people fit inside a stereotype, the Enneagram actually teaches us that we’ve been living from a place of limitation rather than expansion.

When George Gurdjieff first introduced the cultural West to the symbol, it was part of a mystery school practice designed to break people out of their trance. Gurdjieff recognized that people were asleep to themselves, living from reaction, not awareness.

The Enneagram of Personality looks very different from this early work in many ways, but the core still holds true. Your Enneagram type is not just a nickname or number you can use to refer to yourself. It’s not an excuse for your destructive or limiting patterns. The Enneagram is far from a box, as the symbol itself reveals. It’s a circle.

The symbol is simple, but it holds so much wisdom, and it shows us that the Enneagram is a dynamic, moving system. But that’s not all. The Enneagram is a circle, but it’s also three-dimensional. Not only can we travel around the circle, we can also move up or down along the levels of development. Identifying your core type is just one stop on this amazing journey.

So yes – it’s easy to mistake the Enneagram for a reductive personality test if you don’t know much about it. But with a little bit of exploration, you can start to go deeper and realize the Enneagram impacts far more than just your personality. It’s a new lens for your whole life, from your self-work to your relationships, career, and creative practice.

Want to learn more? Join the Enneagram School of Awakening’s Basics Workshop on Saturday, April 4 from 12-2 p.m. ET. We’ll introduce you to the Enneagram and its 9 ways of moving through the world. If you’re already familiar with the Enneagram, consider this an invitation to learn more about the Embodiment Tradition our faculty is trained in, which brings you into a connection to each type within yourself.
